Our History

Local 406-C originally belonged to Local 2 of the IPP&AU in  New York City . In 1947 Local 2 decided to leave Newsday for various reasons. Local 406-C then requested and was granted a Charter within the International Printing Pressmen's and Assistant’s  Union  (IPP&AU). In 1983 the IPP&AU merged with the Graphics Arts International Union (GAIU) and we became Local 406-C of the Graphics Communication International Union (GCIU).  In 2005 the GCIU merged with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Union (IBT) and we are known today as Local 406-C of the Graphic Communication Conference of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Union (GCC/IBT).

Important Events:

In 1969 the Transportation Department was organized and became the second Local 406 bargaining unit within Newsday. The Machineshop and Electrical Shop followed immediately afterwards merging in with the Pressroom Bargaining Unit agreement.

In 1972 the Collating Department for the Sunday edition merged in with the Pressroom Bargaining Unit agreement.

In 1973 the Building Maintenance Department was organized and became the third Local 406 bargaining unit.

In 1976 the Editorial Department was organized and became the fourth Local 406 bargaining unit.

In 1979 the Platemaking Department was organized and became the fifth Local 406 bargaining unit.

In 1984 American Bank Stationary located in  Hicksville  became part of Local 406; they have since relocated to other parts of the country.

In 1991 Electronic Pre-Press Department was organized and became the sixth Local 406 bargaining unit.
